The Hunter Valley is known throughout the world as one of the planets best wine growing regions. There are well over one hundred wineries in the district, many of which have been in operation since the nineteenth century and some of the best known names in the Australian wine growing industry have established vineyards here. It is also the center of one of Australia’s largest mining regions with million of tonnes of high quality coal are mined from the Hunter Valley every year. The Hunter valley is located just to the west of the city of Newcastle and is also only an hour and a half’s drive north from Sydney. The Hunter Valley is also home to a huge thoroughbred horse breeding industry with many top line stables including the massive Emirates complex located on the New England highway near the town of Scone.
Over the last decade the region has become a popular holiday destination and thousands of Sydney siders come here for a short break to get away from the hustle and bustle of the pressure cooker lifestyle they lead in the big city. There are now lots of quality retreats and resorts that have grown up in the Hunter valley to cater for this market. The Hunter Valley is a great place to go for a golfing weekend with friends and hang out in a great resort with plenty of good restaurants and wineries close by to choose from. It is a very sophisticated playground to come and visit. There are plenty of different accommodation styles to choose from ranging from cosy B&B’s set among the vines to luxury five star resorts with all the luxuries you can imagine.
The Hunter Valley is interspersed with many interesting local towns to visit. Singleton, Branxton, Scone and Maitland all have something to offer the visitor an apart from the wineries, there are lots of interesting galleries and shops to visit. The beach is also not far away and it is an easy day trip to the reach and enjoy the seaside attractions around Newcastle and Port Stephens. During the winter months, a drive to the Barrington Tops region can often result in the opportunity for some games in the snow and the mountain scenery here is sensational. Anyone who has spent some holiday time in the Hunter Valley, will be delighted to tell you what a fantastic relaxing and enjoyable time they had. It is a place that everyone returns to once they have had their first experience.
